The Reds ended a run of four straight league defeats to lift themselves off the foot of the Conference with a comprehensive performance.

They tore Alty apart in the first half should have gone ahead after just thee minutes went Clare volleyed wide from Tony Scully's cross.

Clare made up for his miss on 34 minutes when he rounded off a superb passing move to break he deadlock, Scully threaded a neat ball through to Steve Burton, whose low cross low allowed Clare to turn the ball home from close range.

Altrincham almost hit back just before half-time when Warren Peyton had a goalbound effort blocked bravely by the sliding Paul Armstrong.

That proved to be the only threat from the visiting team as Crawley controlled the second period and took the game out of sight on the hour.

Clare was released by a clever flick from strike partner Burton and although keeper Stuart Coburn managed to get a hand on his powerful drive, he could not stop it bouncing into the net.
